Maintaining Speed and Power during the COVID-19 Outbreak

By Nunzio Signore (BA, CPT, NASM, PES, FMS)

No one could have ever imagined the position that college, high school and even pro baseball would be in at this time. Well with RPP having to close temporarily, I have been quarantined (much like everyone else in the northeast) in the house with my daughter and my wife, trying to figure out 50 new ways to reinvent the wheel. In that time, I keep working on our business, trying to use this downtime to find ways to hit the ground running once we’re all up and around again. Through it all, it’s been great to see the baseball community come together and help young athletes, with “less than optimal” equipment, maintain and continue to build their athleticism. 4-Day Full Body Program (w/ equipment) – Phase 1

4-Day Full Body (equipment needed)

PHASE 1

With gyms closing all over due to COVID-19, and athletes not having training facilities at their disposal, we are providing the following 4-day program to those with access to gym equipment.  The workout addresses Speed and Power, the two training residuals that dissipate the quickest (7-14 days).

FYI, don’t get too crazy worrying about max strength losses at this time, you’ve got approximately 30 days before they start to fall off. Hopefully this will help manage training residuals until all systems are “go” again. Continue reading “4-Day Full Body Program (w/ equipment) — Phase 1”

3-Day Full Body Program (minimal equipment) – Phase 1

3-day Full Body Program

PHASE 1

With gyms closing all over due to COVID-19, and athletes not having training facilities at their disposal, we are providing the following 3-day program for those with access to little or no equipment.

Continue reading “3-Day Full Body Program (minimal equipment) — Phase 1”

What to Do With All the Data Coming Out of Showcases?

During the past year several showcases announced partnerships with technology companies, whereby participants skills are measured during their events.  We’re not talking about the usual 60-yard dash.  We’re talking about esoteric topics like vertical bat angles of a swing and spin efficiency levels on a pitch.  On the one hand this is great news for the game. Technology is changing baseball for the better and the data can be invaluable for both training and evaluation. On the other hand, although I am a big believer in tech and the value it brings, there is an issue. Continue reading “What to Do With All the Data Coming Out of Showcases?”

The Best of 2019 – Strength Training Articles

As we get closer to a new year I would like to look back and get a bit reflective. A few years ago, I started a series in which I posted the most popular blogs of the year. How to Train for Athleticism in Pitchers

Training Athleticism in Pitchers - Part 1 Top

In order to effectively train for athleticism in pitchers we first need to:

    1. Understand Key Points in the Delivery – Understand the key points in the delivery and how to develop effective power by training it in the weight room
    2. Addressing Energy Leaks – Identify and fix energy leaks (mechanics / disconnects)
    3. Customizing Throwing and Strength Training Programs – Be able to assess what “type” of pitcher we are dealing with in order to effectively train them to produce optimum power to throw a baseball

Let’s get started… Continue reading “How to Train for Athleticism in Pitchers”

Blast Motion Baseball Metrics, Rotation, Angles and Power

blast motion baseball

In my previous internship before RPP, part of my responsibilities included watching Minor League baseball games. After my first few games, I noticed a recurring trend, every player wore a Blast Motion Baseball sensor during the game. As I saw more organizations’ Minor League teams, not all had their players wear the sensors; however, the idea behind it was simple, data collection.

At RPP, we use Blast Motion sensors for the same purpose, and this allows us to help identify and develop athletes’ inefficiencies. The only difference is we do not have the ability to collect data from athletes’ in-game at-bats. Therefore, we collect data from batting practice at our facility and are still able to get a good picture of what an athlete does well, and what they struggle with.
